GHT's third album tentatively titled "The Atlantian Emerald" is set to be released shortly. The album will feature a 5 part jazz suite based on a fictitious movie created by Johnny and Nathan. (the same movie which has inspired movie themes on the past two releases as well as the infamous GHT Condor and Squid logo) In conjunction with the album, GHT are releasing video vignettes of selected scenes from the movie which has inspired the creation of the new suite. GHT and Hawksley Workman collide on this head banging, pelvic-grinding, soft-shoeing, hippy tripping, soul-soothing, make out session of sweet sounds.
“This is What You Get...” when long time friends and collaborators Johnny Griffith and Nathan Hiltz move their risk-taking style in a genre warping direction with their 2nd album. Shaping their departure from mainstream jazz is indie music hero and madman Hawksley Workman. With 6 Juno nominations and 2 wins, a solo rock cabaret and countless producing successes, his eclectic sensibilities were a natural fit. Hawksley insisted on recording live to tape, sacrificing the convenience and editing power of digital for the darker, richer sound of analogue. Fuelled by popsicles and good wine, GHT, focused on the overall feel of the songs. The result is a vibrant and honest recording that engages the listener wholeheartedly.
GHT begins rooted in tradition and launches into the unexpected appealing to more than just your average jazz listener. They’ve rallied impromptu dance parties with hippies on Salt Spring Island, elated elementary school students and festival audiences from St. John’s to the Yukon. They incorporate influences from Duke Ellington to Otis Redding, from Ornette Coleman to Black Sabbath, from Webern to Kermit the Frog, blending them seamlessly into a purely enjoyable ride. Prepare yourself for some rock and roll raunch, classic post-bop, and one of the catchiest pop tunes you’ll ever hear.
Hearing GHT’s music is only one aspect of their considerable talents. Taking the term ‘mulit-tasking’ to the extreme, each member masterfully contributes on numerous instruments to produce a sound much larger than your average trio... even if it means playing more than one instrument at once! Nathan expertly synchronizes his seductive guitar styling while driving steadfast time feel with socked feet across the bass pedals. Johnny arms himself with every horn in the arsenal – sometimes simultaneously – building intricate and climbing melodies. Together they prove there is no limit to their imagination. Drummer Sly Juhas is in high demand across the country and expertly moves between jazz, country and indie scenes. Sly’s high octane playing rounds out the trio’s demanding and energetic groove. Simply put – they have to be seen to be believed!
GHT’s debut album “Now and Then”, was produced by and featured Canadian Jazz virtuoso and master of the bass, vibraphone and piano, Don Thompson. After multiple national tours, jazz festivals, a prestigious Grand Prix du Jazz nomination from the Montreal Jazz Festival, Jazz Album of the Year from Jazz FM (2009), and weekly residences at Toronto’s historic Rex Hotel, the trio has proven not only are they at the forefront of their genre – they’re creating their own.
